Black Box is a 2020 American science fiction horror film directed by Emmanuel Osei-Kuffour Jr. and written by Emmanuel Osei-Kuffour Jr. and Stephen Herman. The film stars Mamoudou Athie, Phylicia Rashad, Amanda Christine, Tosin Morohunfola and Troy James. Jason Blum serves as an executive producer under his Blumhouse Television banner.
Black Box was released on October 6, 2020, by Amazon Studios on its OTT platform Prime Video as one of the two first offerings from the 8-film anthology Welcome to the Blumhouse.[4]
After losing his wife and his memory in a car accident, a single father undergoes an agonizing experimental treatment that causes him to question who he really is.

Production[edit]
In February 2020, it was announced Mamoudou Athie, Phylicia Rashad, Amanda Christine, Tosin Morohunfola and Troy James, had joined the cast of the film, with Jason Blum producing under his Blumhouse Television banner, with Amazon Studios distributing.[5] The film is the first in an 8-part deal Blumhouse has with Amazon Studios.[6] Principal photography took place in New Orleans, Louisiana.[7]

It was released on October 6, 2020, alongside The Lie, as one of the first two films in the eight film anthology Welcome to the Blumhouse .[8]

On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds an approval rating of 74% based on 57 reviews, with an average rating of 6.40/10. The site's critics consensus reads, "An intriguing debut for writer-director Emmanuel Osei-Kuffour, Black Box compensates for a lack of surprises with strong performances and an emotionally rewarding story."[9] On Metacritic, the film has a weighted average score of 62 out of 100, based on 11 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews".[10]
The Black Box grossed $46,147 at the box office.[3]
